Deliberations over quality of Hammanskraal water continues
The Gauteng provincial Department of Water and Sanitation (DSW) and the City of Tshwane remain at logger heads over the quality of water delivered Hammanskraal. This as the City of Tshwane continues to assure the residents of Hammanskraal that the water supplied is per set standard and is drinkable.
DSW spokesperson Sputnik Ratau, continues to voice the department’s displeasure over the quality of water supplied by the municipality.
This comes after Tau joined officials from DWS, South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and community representatives in a follow-up water sampling visit at Temba Water Treatment Plant, Kekana Primary School and Refentse Clinic amongst others. The visit followed a complaint lodged with the SAHRC in 2018 by the residents of Hammanskraal over the quality of water supplied by the municipality.
“As a City that is committed to the delivery of high quality services, of which the provision of water is but one, it is prudent for us to undertake this visit as part of an on-going process of sampling water throughout the City supplies water.
We would like to assure our residents in the Hammanskraal and nearby areas that the City in cooperation with DSW and SAHRC, will make every effort to ensure that the water quality stays 100% compliant.
In addition, the results of the water samples will be made known to the residents, as we are an administration that is open, honest and responsive,” said Tau.
In the meanwhile Ratau said only once the investigations are completed they would be able to assure the residents that water is safe to use. “We can’t take chances or simply listen to anyone on the quality of water supplied.
Currently we have to wait for the result of the test to be released. The fact of the matter is that we are not happy with the quality of water. Tau lashed out at media reports on numerous on-line platforms which seemed to suggest that some monitoring points had challenges with colour, turbidity, ammonia and general microbiological determinants.
“The City disapproves this notion on the basis that officials present mutually agreed that the water colour is acceptable.
Officials went to drink and smell the water, once again found it to be suitable for drinking. The samples are currently at CSIR for microbiological, chemical and physical analysis expected to be released in the next coming weeks
