Tshwane to boost climate-friendly infrastructure with support from the C40 Cities Finance Facility

The City of Tshwane is on track to become a green and healthy city. To show commitment to sustainable economic growth, the City has officially partnered with the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) on 5 April 2019.
The CFF will help the City to build two zero-carbon projects in Tshwane over the next few years: a biogas plant and a bicycle lane, thereby contributing to the City's ambitious climate change goals. Starting this year, the City of Tshwane will produce its own reports to investigate sustainable transport and electricity.
The first project, a combined heat and power biogas plant at one of the City's wastewater treatment works, is expected to cover at least 20% of the works' energy needs and to significantly improve operation and lead to the increased deployment of biogas technology across South Africa – making Tshwane a national leader in deploying this technology.

The second project is a bicycle lane along a transport corridor in the city, which will connect Mamelodi with the job opportunities in Tshwane East. This project represents the first step towards a coherent, connected and safer cycle network across Tshwane.
To make these projects a reality, the City of Tshwane has been selected as one of 15 cities worldwide to receive technical support from the CFF. This assistance will allow the City to build the business case for the projects. It will also support the City to develop an economically and environmentally sustainable method of funding the initiatives.
During the launch of the partnership, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Cllr Stevens Mokgalapa, said: "It is a great honour to receive this of technical support from our partner CFF. It enhances our effort to embed sustainability into the service delivery priorities. The support will further enhance sustainable infrastructure strategies in the green economy trajectory."
